More information

22-Aug-2023

Mercedes-Benz AG has introduced new software for checking IMDS Supplier MDSs to ensure compliance to legal requirements. In addition, the rules from the IMDS REC001 General are checked in more precise detail.

Currently, rejections are performed from two different in-house systems. For this reason, it may happen that you still receive a rejection report with the Daimler error codes. These Daimler error codes will be replaced by the new software according to the rules from IMDS REC001, which describes the error in more detail. Please note that for these and many other technical reasons only MDSs with a full version can be sent to Mercedes-Benz AG. MDSs in handshake mode were automatically rejected.

Important information about IMDS Release 14.0 Recycling changes and legacy data

As you may be aware, with IMDS Release 14.0 the Recyclate handling has been changed. In addition to previous recyclate, now renamed as ‘Mechanical Recyclate’, two new types of information reporting were added, Chemical Recyclate and Bio-based content. In addition, recyclate reporting expanded now for classifications 6.x, 7.3 and 9.x

Before IMDS Release 14.0 it was not possible to add any recyclate information for materials under classifications 6.x, 7.3 and 9.x . With IMDS Release 14.0 you can now enter information about the source of the material, including recycling and – depending on the classification – information about bio-based content. Since recycle content reporting was not available for the above-mentioned categories before, pre-IMDS Release 14.0 materials under those above-mentioned classification, will show “Not yet answered” in the new “Recycle content section”.

If you start rejecting pre-IMDS Release 14.0 materials anywhere within received MDSs for "not yet answered" recycling questions, please be aware that this impacts the supply chain and will lead to delays in reporting within the whole supply chain. Material creators would have to update all materials of the above-mentioned classifications and those updates have to be communicated through the supply chain.

We therefore recommend accepting unanswered recycling questions for material classification 6.x, 7.3 and 9.x in pre-IMDS Release 14.0 MDSs. In case you are rejecting because an OEM does not accept unanswered questions, please consider that you as a direct OEM supplier can change recyclate information in the Recipient-specific Information for OEMs, without impacting the whole supply chain.

Under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as amended by the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to prioritise and risk assess chemicals from the 2014 update of the TSCA Work Plan.  The purpose of risk evaluation is to determine whether a substance presents an unreasonable risk to a relevant potentially exposed or susceptible sub population.  Where an unreasonable risk is determined, the EPA manages those risks by imposing restrictions on the use of that substance.

The first 10 substances identified for evaluation were announced on December 19, 2016.  Subsequently the EPA has announced the evaluation of a further 20 substances designated as High-Priority Substances.  The substances included in these two groups can be found in IMDS within the following two new substance groups:

  • TSCA top 10 priority substances
  • TSCA top 20 priority substances

Using a Where Used Search you can find any materials of parts that contain within these groups to assess your exposure to these substances, and enable risk mitigation where applicable (e.g. to plan for substitution where a substance may be restricted in the US market).  Further background on this topic can be found on the EPA webpage.

GADSL Update

15-Feb-2023

Two changes to SC90 checks were implemented in IMDS. These changes are already listed in the check message document (which also includes the IMDS Release 14.0 check changes) available in the IMDS FAQ.

Allow Silver >80% in glass (classification 7.2)

Currently, a warning is shown in the check result in case a material of classification 7.2 contains >80% metallic substances (substance group “Chk: Classification 1-4”).
To allow the creation of conductive glass materials, which may contain more than 80% of silver, the following change will be implemented:

  • A new substance group “Chk: Classification 1-4 w/o silver” will be created, which will contain all metallic substance except for silver.
  • The existing check will be adapted to refer to this new substance group. Thereby, silver will be excluded from the existing check and materials of classification 7.2 may contain an unlimited portion of silver.

Allow Iron >14% in all metals (classifications 1.x – 4.x)

Currently, a warning is shown in the check result in case a material of classification 2.x – 3.x or 4.1 contains >14% iron.
To allow a reasonable portion of iron in different alloys (e.g., nickel alloy classified as 3.4), all metallic classifications (1.x – 4.x) will be allowed for iron portions >14%.

Mazda updated their IMDS Supplier information. You can find more information in the section "OEM Specific Information" > Mazda.

01-Feb-2023

With the changes of IMDS Recommendations 007, 008, 011 and 012 in September 2022, the IMDS Steering Committee removed several published materials from these recommendations, which were not defined by any norm. In a next step, these materials were decided to be hidden, as the IMDS Steering Committee can only take responsibility of materials that are described in norms. The Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik (ZVO), who supported in the creation of the surface treatments, offered to take over the responsibility and maintenance of the surface treatments they supported for the above mentioned Recommendations.

In January 2023, the surface treatments from ZVO have been moved to the company Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik [10216] and all other materials that have been removed from the above mentioned Recommendations have been hidden and cannot be further used in new MDSs. As the MDSs moved to ZVO are issuing warnings for used ranges, the IMDS Steering Committee decided to temporarily exempt the moved MDSs from IMDS checks, similat to the IMDS Standard Material suppliers. Therefore, Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik [10216] is temporarily added to the IMDS Standard Material suppliers and their MDSs are exempt from the IMDS checks.

The IMDS Steering Committee asks all suppliers in IMDS to not reject MDSs for the used ranges in materials by Zentralverband Oberflächentechnik [10216].
