Automotive industry plans recycling database

RÜSSELSHEIM (dpa). A materials database set up by eight car manufacturers will facilitate the recyling of old cars in future. In March 2000 at the latest, all materials used in new cars will be stored centrally, according EDS of Rüsselsheim, the software company undertaking the work. This would give the companies a detailed overview of the materials used in future old cars, EDS spokesman Stefan König said. According to EDS, Audi, BMW, Daimler-Chrysler, Ford, Opel, Porsche, VW and Volvo are participating in the project. At present, 30 suppliers have declared themselves prepared to feed the database regularly with data on the composition of the components supplied by them. Thus, companies can determine at a later date precisely which materials will arise at about which point in time and in what quantity.
