New Internet application to facilitate the recycling of car components

EDS, Rüsselsheim, one of the largest service providers for information technology (IT), is setting up an international electronic material data system (IMDS) on behalf of the car manufacturers Audi, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Opel, Porsche, VW and Volvo. The Internet-based system will provide the car manufacturers with information on which materials the supplied components of a car are composed of. According to the current planning, the IMDS will go productive after a pilot phase and the necessary user training in March 2000.

"A so-called 'model office' lets our customers work with the system even during the development phase," Frank Lloydl of EDS explains the project. "Thus, the car manufacturers are directly involved in the development of the material data system which considerably increases the effectiveness and quality of the development process" according to the EDS director responsible for Supply Chain Management in Germany.

At the end of 1999, a three-month pilot phase started, in which 30 suppliers are taking part. All participants are linked to an "electronic community" via the Internet. This virtual community will simplify the recycling of car components in the future by means of direct communication.

The starting point for the software solution was the voluntary commitment of the car industry to recycle 95% of the mass of a vehicle by the year 2015. This will only be possible, however, if precise information on the supplied parts are available.
